Historic Water Wheel Undergoes Essential Repairs

Higher Mill Museum Trustee Ian Gibson oversees repairs

Lancashire Museums' Helmshore Mills showcases Richard Arkwright’s scientific machines, which put Lancashire on the map as a textile and scientific manufacturing leader.

Opened in 1789, Helmshore Mills used waterpower before electricity was available. The 200-year-old waterwheel in Higher Mill is currently undergoing essential repairs by the specialist team at Lancashire County Museum Service.

For #BritishScienceWeek, we’re celebrating our museum staff who work tirelessly to understand and preserve the inventions in our collections, ensuring they last for future generations.

Helmshore Mills is closed for winter but is open for school and pre-booked tours.
